It just occurred to me what employers of workers told to simply follow the standard operating procedure or script are directed to say:
“Don’t think. Machines think. Your job is just to follow the procedure that they’ve laid out.”
This probably will be the automated consumer service or complaint number in coming years — without any slipups such as an accidental inclusion of a memo note, “Send them the cockroach letter” when a customer complains about a bug infestation, or otherwise inform them that this is a brand new problem that never has occurred before, and that they always put the customer first, etc.
This gives a new meaning to automating work. Not much room for an institutional memory by workers who have come to know the overall system and can think outside the AI box to actually help a customer with a problem that has not been foreseen.
AI will only work in a world that is totally predictable and foreseeable.
